I have been wanting to lay my hands on an Indian sci-fic book and when I went through “History Revisited” by Nishant Joshi, there were lot of expectations built up for such a young author. After reading the book, the first questions popping my mind were:
- What’s the difference between sci-fiction novel and a historical fiction?
- How do you do justice to the sci-fiction genre?
If anything I would rather put this book in the historical fiction category more than in sci-fic. Why is the author made to believe that this goes in the sci-fic genre is beyond my understanding. Maybe because of the time travel concept? I really don’t know. However, reading the book, what I know is that this book is an ambitious project taken up by Nishant Joshi and I would really applaud his courage to venture into a genre that has hardly any takers in India.
More about the book…….
The cover of the book seems to be a take from some graphics of a foreign storyline and hardly does justice to the Indian-ness of this story. It seems to be contradictory to the image the story conveys.
Time Travel has always been a favourite concept of humans and Indian Philosophy abounds with the notions of time and space. This popular concept is the basis of the whole story. So while the experiences of Nishant, Suraj and Sachin are nicely described, the depth of experience that the sci-fic demands is missing mainly because the protagonists are still of the present era rather than of the past. This allows the beginner reader (for sci-fic genre reading) easier.
Ahh! Mumbai and it’s fixation with vada-pav will never go off. So we do have reminders dotted in the whole novel about the vadapav obsession. 🙂
So what’s the verdict?
Pick it and enjoy it and though you might find the gaps into the present day thinking in the past time journey, take it at your stride and get going ahead with the reading. Also, do encourage Nishant to write more sci-fic…. we need more authors in this genre and my hopes are that Nishant will do justice in more books that shall come!
